Songwriter sues Spears
(Friday May 13, 2005 11:45 AM)
Britney Spears is being sued for copyright infringement.
In a lawsuit filed on May 5 against Spears, her record label and affiliated companies, Steve Wallace claims that he wrote her June 1999 hit song "Sometimes" in 1990.
He obtained a 'poor man's copyright' by sending the song to himself through the post in a sealed, postmarked envelope.
The suit contains a copy of an e-mail allegedly written by Spears which says: "I now know for a fact that you wrote sometimes. But there's nothing I can do about it."
The lyrics of both Wallace's version of the song and the recorded version are reported to be nearly identical.
Wallace's lawyer, John Ritchison, said they had tried unsuccessfully to settle the matter out of court. The damages they are seeking are unspecified.
Spears' record label Sony-BMG have thus far refused to make a comment on the case.
