Bowie in sabbatical

(Wednesday May 03, 2006 03:09 AM)

David Bowie plans to take a year off from music, because he is "fed up with the industry".

The iconic rock star announced news of the sabbatical at a party last week, two years after undergoing heart surgery and famously quitting smoking.

Speaking about his decision not to play live or record for 12 months, Bowie told Vanity Fair: "I'm fed up with the industry. And I've been fed up for quite some time.

"I'm taking a year off - no touring, no albums. I go for a walk every morning, and I watch a ton of movies. One day, I watched three Woody Allen movies in a row."

Meanwhile, Bowie continues to champion new music, after playing with Arcade Fire last year and his interview with the Secret Machines, which was recently published in the UK press.

He continued: "I've been listening to Arcade Fire and Secret Machines and this great opera from the '80s called "Nixon In China". It's just that. He gets off the plane. He has dinner with Mao.

"Someday, I might do opera. But I don't have a musical in me, much less a vampire musical."
