Doherty: The poet
(Tuesday October 03, 2006 06:57 PM)
Pete Doherty will appear on UK TV this week to mark National Poetry Day.
The Babyshambles star will read a Siegfried Sassoon poem on Thursday on the show, which is called "Poetry: From Pete Doherty To Andrew Motion".
Speaking about the initiative, Doherty said Wilfred Owen had been an enormous influence on his writing, citing Emily Dickinson and Rimbaud as other key figures.
The former Libertine also said he used poetry to get him through a recent stint in prison, explaining: "I had to go into something. I didn't really know who I was and I certainly didn't know what I was doing there.
"For f*ck all, I ended up in Wandsworth and really, really, I was a bit green, y'know what I mean? I've got a shelf full of books with HMP Pentonville, HMP Wandsworth on them, smuggled 'em out, yeah.
"'Crime And Punishment' I read! Except my cellmate at the time kept pulling his shorts down and getting his knob out, and going, 'Is this normal, Pete?' And I'm trying to read."
National Poetry Day takes place on Thursday. "Poetry: From Pete Doherty To Andrew Motion" goes out on the Artsworld channel at 9pm.
