Robbie slammed for lyrical slur

(Tuesday October 24, 2006 01:51 AM)

Robbie Williams has come under fire from disabled organisations after an uncensored version of his "Rudebox" single was included on his new album, also titled "Rudebox".

The track includes the line, "dance like you just won the Special Olympics". The word "special" was omitted from the single version which reached number four in the UK charts in September

The reference has drawn complaints from Anne Pridmore, chairwoman of the British Council of Disabled People.

In a statement, Pridmore said: "I am a big Robbie Williams fan and I went to see him recently, but I will not be buying this album.

"I find the lyric about the Special Olympics highly offensive and it is rank disablism."

A spokesperson for Williams responded by saying that the pop star had not meant any offence.

They commented: "He adores sport of any kind and is full of admiration for disabled athletes."

The second single from "Rudebox", a cover of Lewis Taylor's "Lovelight", will be released on November 13th.
