'Rings' music tops soundtrack poll

(Sunday May 28, 2006 11:33 PM)

The music from Lord of the Rings has been voted the top movie soundtrack for the fifth year running.

The Oscar-winning score composed by Howard Shore was the clear favourite in the poll by Classic FM.

Hans Zimmer's epic soundtrack for Russell Crowe film Gladiator was second.

In third place was the 2004 film Ladies In Lavender, which starred Dame Judi Dench and Dame Maggie Smith. The score was written by Nigel Hess.

Schindler's List and Star Wars were next, both composed by John Williams.

Williams had 11 entries in the top 100, including Saving Private Ryan (9) and Jurassic Park (10).

Lawrence of Arabia and Dances With Wolves also made the top 10.

Recent blockbusters in the top 100 included Brokeback Mountain, Memoirs of a Geisha and King Kong.

But it was the Lord of the Rings trilogy which remained the favourite.

Classic FM station manager Darren Henley said: "Howard Shore's score to the Lord of the Rings is a modern classic that has introduced a new generation to classical music."
